A Note to My Biggest Fan and Staunchest Supporter

Editor's note: Porter vividly remembers his father's shaving ritual...

Helping men get that ritual back is a big reason why he set out to create the world's greatest razor.

But Porter's fondness for his father stretches far beyond that...

In today's Masters Series – adapted from the June 8, 2018 Digest – Porter explains what Father's Day means to him. He also encourages readers to show their appreciation for the fathers and sons in their lives with a note or by considering a special Father's Day offer...

A Note to My Biggest Fan and Staunchest Supporter

By Porter Stansberry

Father's Day is next weekend...

So instead of thinking about finance or money, I wanted to take a day and talk about something that's far more important: Family.

Father's Day means a lot to me. Maybe that's because I'm adopted. Or maybe it's because my dad is my hero. I'm not sure. But I do know that I've never met a finer, more generous, or kinder man than my father.

I'm the little kid on the left. That's my brother, Mills, on the right. Dad is doing his best Neil Diamond impression! And as you can see, Dad was loving us, with everything he had. He's done that every single day, for as long as I've known him... from the first day I met him... and every day since. Dad has always been my biggest fan and my staunchest supporter.

When you've got young kids, being a dad isn't that complicated...

When Dad would come home from work, I'd run to the door. He'd pick me up and give me a hug. Then I'd beg for him to "pick up two." I wanted him to pick my brother up, too. He always did... Until we got so big that he just couldn't lift us anymore. I remember vividly the last time he picked both of us up.

Today, I'm at that stage right now with my two sons, Traveler and Seaton...

I can still pick both of them up – barely. I still put both of them to bed every night. Even though they both read fine on their own, they still like to snuggle against my shoulder and let me read to them as they fall asleep. I've read all of the Harry Potter books and all of the J.R.R. Tolkien books, plus a few other series, to both of my sons. I treasure every minute. And I dread the day when they don't want me to read to them anymore.

This picture was taken recently. As you might notice from the boys' shirts, we were celebrating the launch of my friend Whitney Tilson's Empire Financial Research.

Of course, as you get older, being a good dad gets a lot tougher and more complicated...

About 10 years ago, when I was in my early 30s, one of my best friends disappeared. I'd known him almost my entire life. We grew up together. We played sports together in high school. We were more like brothers than friends. At various points in our lives, we'd lived with each other, supported each other.

And then, one day, he was simply gone. Missing. No one could find him. His wife called me, in a panic. We did all of the things that you do in these situations – called the police, hired a private detective, put up posters, asked the local media for help, etc.

But the first thing I did was called my dad. "Dad, I don't know what's going to happen... but I know I need you here." He drove through the night and got to Baltimore the next morning. Several of our oldest friends flew in to help, too, but Dad was there first. Tragically, it was too late to save my friend. Dad couldn't spare me from the anguish of that loss or the horror of losing someone that way... but he could be there. And he was there. Constantly, always. A foundation. The one thing in my life that has never changed and never will.

That to me, is what Father's Day is all about.

I hope you'll take some time this week to write a note to your father...

Or to your sons. Tell them what you admire most about them. Tell them you're proud of them. Remind them about the good times you've shared. And promise to be there for them, whenever they need you.

And of course... Father's Day in most homes involves a little gift giving...

So if you want to give your dad a present, I hope you'll consider the razor that I've been developing for the past few years: OneBlade.

We've recently launched a new polymer-based version of our revolutionary shaving tool that makes it much more affordable, along with a hybrid version that combines those elements with the solid stainless steel of our flagship razor. And for Father's Day, we're offering the opportunity to buy one of these revolutionary new razors as part of a complete premium shaving kit and take $50 off...

Why have I spent so much time and money building a new kind of shaving tool?

Well, I wanted to build something that would outlive me. I wanted to build something that my sons could eventually tell their sons – and their grandsons – that I built.

How did I build the world's best razor?

I started with a completely blank page and hired some of the world's foremost designers and engineers. The razor they built won the most prestigious engineering and design award given to new products in 2016.

But, what matters to me is that tens of thousands of people have tried our product and they love it. So what makes OneBlade so much better than any other kind of razor?

No other product on the market is like OneBlade...

It isn't a cartridge razor, like the kind you see advertised on the Internet for $1 (even though they cost a lot more than that). And it isn't an old-fashioned safety razor that's hard to use and can cut you up.

It's something completely different.

We spent a year taking apart virtually every cartridge and safety razor that's made today. We studied virtually every blade sold to consumers for shaving. What we learned in our research won't surprise you: The best shave you can get is from a straight razor.

One sharp and – more important – perfectly smooth cutting edge, combined with high-quality soaps (with plenty of essential oils) delivers the closest possible shave. And it won't surprise you to learn that the highest-quality steel and the most refined edge (especially if it's coated in platinum), offers the least irritation. It is possible to have a shave that doesn't irritate your face at all.

You will never get this kind of shave from a cartridge razor. The quality of the blades is far inferior. You can't make up for these poor-quality edges by using more of them. Our designers called the steel in cartridge razors "sharpened tinfoil."

The other significant design flaw in cartridge razors is the spacing between the blades. There isn't nearly enough "shaving gap." As a result, most of the blades in a cartridge razor can't cut anything. They can, however, irritate your skin by pulling hair out and then cutting it below where it sits in the follicle. That's a major cause of ingrown hairs.

Why not use a straight razor?

Well, because most of us want to make sure that our nose remains on our face! The problem, as you know if you've ever gotten a straight-razor shave from a barber, is that you have to maintain the perfect shaving angle (31 degrees) or else you risk cutting yourself.

Most men don't want to have to deal with the consequences of using a straight razor. And using a double-bladed safety razor isn't much safer. Why not? Well, the geometry of having two cutting surfaces means that you can't design a handle that only exerts a limited amount of pressure in one direction. That's why we designed OneBlade to use a one-sided, leading-edge blade. That's the whole secret to building a tool that can deliver a straight-razor quality shave, safely.

You see, like a modern cartridge razor, OneBlade is built with a "hinge" that's controlled by an internal, Teflon-coated spring. This controls the cutting pressure and allows our razor's head to "float" at the correct angle on your face. This makes our product vastly easier to use. Yes, it will take you a few shaves to get used to how this works. It's not exactly like using a cartridge razor, because it has a single edge. But it's much, much easier to use than a safety razor or a straight razor.

And then... there's our blade...

Unlike just about every other major razor maker, we don't make our own blades. Why not? Because the world's best steel for shaving has been made, for decades, in Japan. The Japanese steelmaker Feather is the world's leading maker of barber tools.

The next time you get a haircut, ask the barber if they're using Feather scissors. The answer, if you're in a good barbershop, will always be yes. The particular blade we designed the OneBlade razor around is the FHS-10. It has the world's most consistently perfect leading edge. Again, we could have chosen any blade in the world. And we studied all of them – under a microscope – to find the best. We picked Feather's because it is the best.

Ironically, using these blades – the best you can buy anywhere in the world – is still far more affordable than using a cartridge razor. Don't believe the hype: You can't shave for $1 a month. Cartridge razors are expensive, as I'm sure you know. We recommend using a new Feather blade each time you shave. Why? They only cost about $0.75 each. (But our customers tell us they can get two or three shaves from each blade, which can reduce your shaving expenses to almost nothing.)

And you'll get a much better shave – as good as going to the barber and getting a straight-razor shave.

You can learn more about our product and see our special Father's Day offer by clicking this link. There's no better time (or better price) to try this revolutionary new way of shaving. I know if you try our product for 30 shaves, you'll never shave with another razor again.

But... whether you send a gift or not... be sure to reach out to your father or son this week.

Regards,

Porter Stansberry
