Global Warming is a "hot" issue... Wal-Mart Blunders... Chavez turns a deaf ear... More mixed metaphors...
Goldsmith Comment: Porter is still lost at sea off the coast of Miami. I didn't receive any e-mails or phone calls this morning, but he should be returning to the Digest on Monday. Until then, I will be filling in.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has threatened to throw U.S. Ambassador William Brownfield out of the country if he continues to "interfere" with Venezuelan affairs. Brownfield told Chavez that he should probably compensate the companies that he plans on nationalizing.
In an attempt to curb economic growth, China is enforcing stricter environmental controls. The government will enforce a 4% annual increase in energy efficiency for companies after two interest-rate hikes failed to slow growth last year.
Wal-Mart thought that hiring civil-rights leader and former U.N. ambassador, Andrew Young, would help revamp the company's image... It was wrong. In an interview with an Los Angeles-based African-American newspaper, Young said that Wal-Mart "should" put its corner store competitors out of business. "You see, those are the people who have been overcharging us... I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans, and now it's Arabs." If that weren't bad enough...
Recently, Wal-Mart has started offering DVD recommendations to their online shoppers. Customers looking at the website pages for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Planet of the Apes were directed toward 'similar items' such as Martin Luther King: I Have a Dream/Assassination of MLK and Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. Read more here.
A new kind of "pump and dump"... A 21-year old man from Florida, Aleksey Kamardin, gained access to other people's online trading accounts, sold their stocks, then used the proceeds to buy shares of a certain, thinly-traded stock. The SEC found that Kamardin had used his own online account to purchase the stock days before the fraud took place. Kamardin gained $82,960 from the fraud.
New highs: Plum Creek (PCL) and Southern Copper (PCU).
You mention "global warming" and the e-mails pour in. Don't worry, we're brewing up another touchy subject. Until then, send your thoughts to feedback@stansberryresearch.com.
"Good job Porter! Stand up to those mindless robots who demand that others conform to their brainwashed view of global warming. These numbskulls take 50 years of data out of the millions of years of Earth's existence and claim we little humans are the cause of a slight temperature rise. How arrogant is that? Never mind the fact that the power of the sun, the sea, and volcanoes make our ability to alter Earth's temperature seem infinitesimal by comparison. According to Ted Danson, Miami was supposed to be underwater by now from rising sea levels due to global warming. And what happened to all of those super-powerful hurricanes everyone predicted last year?" – Subscriber Jeff Masteller
Goldsmith Comment: Well, if Ted Danson was proven wrong, then global warming must be a hoax.
"It is amazing how many folks can deny this when most every scientist in the world concurs that something is causing our Earth to heat up. Please take some time to view An Inconvenient Truth and then comment. You owe it to yourself and your subscribers." – Subscriber Doug Simmer
"Dearest Goldsmith – You, along with many thousands of your closest friends, are making the mistake of confusing weather with climate. Weather is what you see today. Climate is whatever I say it is. Yours Truly, Anonymous Paleoclimatologist." – S&A Oil Report and S&A Gold Report Editor Matt Badiali
Goldsmith Comment: Badiali, the feedback e-mail is for subscribers only.
"Why should we care about Porter's duck-off, Miami condo search, or wet keyboard? How does that information enlighten, educate or benefit us?"
– Subscriber Tom Murphy
"A young man working for me combined 'separate the men from the boys' and 'separate the sheep from the goats' into 'separate the men from the sheep'... to which our backwoods Arkansas-born secretary said, 'Headlights will do that.' Ten years later we still laugh out loud on that one." – Subscriber Bill Bradford
