Despite my prediction of a market collapse, there are still some assets I (Porter) would be happy to own over the intermediate term...
And if you look at my holdings today... the biggest thing I'll be holding is real estate, most of which I bought between 2009 and 2011. Real estate will do well in this next inflationary stage. It will perform much better than stocks because stocks are already trading at a high price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple. But real estate is cheap and affordable... (which factors in price and borrowing costs).
I've also advised readers to start raising some cash. There's always a lot of confusion when I say "cash." But it's simple.
If you're talking about a lot of cash, the easiest thing to do is buy short-term Treasury bills – 30- or 90-day T-bills. Otherwise, you can just leave cash in your brokerage or savings account. It's not hard for most people to manage cash.
Yes, if you keep cash in your brokerage or savings account, you may lose some to inflation... But there is a huge value to holding lots of cash when liquidity exits the market and prices fall. You'll be ready to buy excellent assets for cheap.

Editor's note: Today, we're wrapping up our holiday week series featuring some of Dr. David "Doc" Eifrig's top ideas, secrets, and loopholes of the year...
Over his career in finance and medicine... Doc has accumulated a wealth of insights into investing, saving money, and protecting your health. And he loads each issue of Retirement Millionaire with these ideas. Earlier this week, we shared some of his most popular notes on saving money, protecting your health, and safeguarding your privacy.
Today's Digest compiles a number of important and popular items from Doc that don't fit neatly into any particular category...
Your airbag should change the way you drive. When most of us learned to drive, our instructors told us to keep our hands at the "10 o'clock" and "2 o'clock" positions on the steering wheel. This technique worked well before power steering became standard. On older cars, you needed more leverage to turn the wheel. Not so today... Modern steering wheels turn much more easily. And driving with your hands at "10 and 2" could cause your forearm to smash into your face and eyes or even to fracture if your airbag deploys.
Current recommendations – from both the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association trade association and AAA driving club – state that keeping your hands at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock is best. This keeps your arms out of the way of airbags and pushes them to the side instead of backwards into your face. And you'll still have plenty of control of the steering wheel.
When you feel heartburn coming on, chew a piece of sugar-free gum. When gastric acid is regurgitated, your esophagus inflames. This causes the burning sensation you feel in your chest. It's a common issue. More than 40% of Americans suffer from heartburn once a month, and 7% have heartburn weekly. Fatty meals, alcohol, stress, and certain acidic foods, like grapefruit, are common causes of heartburn.
Antacids – like Tums – are a popular way to fight heartburn. Since it can occur at any time, you may not always have them with you. So when you start to feel heartburn coming on, grab a piece of sugar-free gum. Chewing gum causes your mouth to produce saliva, which can help keep the acid from rising. But don't chew gum with sugar as this will just make the heartburn worse.
Homemade cookies aren't going to sell your house. Realtors often tell their clients to bake cookies before showing the home. The idea is that potential buyers will associate the good feelings generated by the scent of fresh cookies with your home. The inviting aroma will show the house's potential.
They are not wrong to try to harness the strong emotional reaction we have to familiar smells. But these realtors are focusing on the wrong aroma... Recent research published in the Journal of Retailing suggests complex scents – like baking cookies – can distract potential buyers. Scents with multiple layers – chocolate, baking flour, cinnamon, etc. – can cause potential buyers to focus more on the smells than your house.
Instead, the article suggests filling the home with simple, pleasing scents like lemon, basil, lavender, green tea, pine, and cedar. These scents make your home inviting without being overwhelming.
The next time your brain needs a boost, take a whiff of rosemary. A recent study out of the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, U.K., found people performed better on memory tasks in a room that smelled of rosemary than people in a room without the smell.
This study gives more evidence to what people have known for years. The ancient Greeks used rosemary to improve memory. It's believed that rosemary promotes blood flow to the brain and helps maintain the nervous system neurotransmitter acetylcholine... keeping your memory intact. I've written about the powerful reactions people have to different aromas... including lavender and pumpkin.
The next time you have an upset stomach, take a little peppermint. More than just giving you fresh breath, peppermint has been used for thousands of years to improve digestion, lessen cold symptoms, and cure a sore throat. And peppermint is a great, all-natural way to make your stomach feel better. It reduces symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome – like bloating, gas, diarrhea, and stomach pain. It also calms the stomach muscles and helps food move through your stomach more quickly... helping with indigestion and nausea.
You can keep some peppermint tea handy or you can just boil peppermint leaves for a few minutes with water. Just strain the water to remove the leaves before you drink it. Don't have any peppermint handy? Try coffee instead. A compound in brewed coffee – N-methylpyridinium (NMP) – helps upset stomachs, too. It lowers stomach acid to help you feel better.
The business-rating website "Yelp" may not be as unbiased and informative a resource on local businesses as it's made out to be... The site allows users to post online reviews of restaurants, auto shops, doctors, etc. But for years, the website has been controversial. Several lawsuits have claimed Yelp unfairly favors businesses that pay to advertise on the site. Also, many businesses claimed Yelp's review filter is too harsh... and removes legitimate reviews.
We've tested the review filter and found Yelp removed our accurate reviews of different businesses. And it provided no exact reasons for removing the reviews. I've nearly stopped using it because I'm finding much of it to be altered.
Now, Yelp has included a way to see all of a business' reviews. So if you use the site, make sure you see all the reviews. Once you find a business you're interested in, scroll down to the last review. Below it, in light grey text, you'll see an option to view "Unfiltered Reviews." This will give you a better view of what people really think.
Not only are your dollar bills full of germs... But your credit card may be as dirty as your toilet. A small study out of London found 8% of credit cards contain contamination found on a toilet (like fecal matter). And 10% of credit cards in the study were contaminated with the E. coli bacteria. Credit cards and money aren't the only contaminated items you're carrying around, either. Another study in 2011 found almost one in six cellphones have fecal bacteria on them.
The simplest way to protect yourself is to wash your hands... especially before eating. Otherwise, you could transfer those germs on your credit card to your food.
Add a little turmeric to your diet the next time you have achy joints. Turmeric is a spice used in curry. It also gives mustard its yellow color. Turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can relieve joint pain, improve digestion, and protect against memory loss. The benefits come from curcumin – a primary chemical in turmeric.
The spice has been used for centuries for its medicinal qualities. And now, research on turmeric and curcumin is gaining steam. Last year, a study from the journal Diabetes Care found that regular use of turmeric can prevent Type 2 diabetes. Participants in the study were pre-diabetic. Those who ate turmeric still had not developed diabetes after nine months.
So how can you add turmeric to your diet if you're not a fan of curry? You can use it as a spice on salads, in soups, and on rice. And if you use it with black pepper, you'll get even more of the benefits, as pepper helps your body absorb more of the nutrients from the spice.
Most of us have experienced the long wait times and the endless menus trying to navigate corporate customer service phone lines. To speak to a live person, you can try saying "customer service" or pressing "0." But that doesn't always work.
The website Gethuman.com lists shortcuts to getting the help you want... For example, if you want to get a person at Verizon Wireless – one of the companies with a difficult-to-figure-out trick – enter your mobile number and then press the pound key.
The site also allows you to request a call back from some customer service lines... you don't have to wait on hold. Just enter your phone number with Gethuman (which doesn't store it), and you'll receive a call within minutes. No waiting.
